Warm Indian Ocean or icy Atlantic? Bunny chow or fine dining? East Coast swagger or Cape Flats roll.

There are some arguments South Africans may never settle.

Joburg or Cape Town? Braai broodjie or garlic bread? And, most recently, as highlighted by East Coast Radio (ECR) during its KZN Connect Breakfast held at the Mount Nelson: East Coast or West Coast?

So, while Cape Town may have the mountain, the winelands and a host of beautiful beaches, KwaZulu-Natal has heaps of sunshine, warm water, bunny chows and a confidence that suggests it isn't particularly interested in conceding the coastal crown.

The event formed the second edition of its ECR's KwaZulu-Natal: Province of the Future conversation, following an earlier event in Johannesburg.

KZN enters the chat

ECR weekday breakfast host and stand-up comedian Darren Maule, together with ECR Managing Director Mzuvele Mthethwa, took the rivalry beyond beaches, weather and whose food deserves bragging rights.

The radio station celebrates its 30th birthday this October, and has nurtured a relationship with KZN across major sporting moments, cultural milestones, breaking news and community stories, according to Mthethwa, who explained HOW ECR wants the conversation around KZN to get bigger, particularly among businesses and companies looking to expand their vision and investments.

ECR, which shares parent company Kagiso Connect with the Time Out South Africa franchise, has been putting its platform to work for community initiatives, including The Big Favour, which mobilises support for people in need. Future 50, its FNB-backed platform supporting small and medium-sized businesses, has also expanded beyond KZN, with its third season extending to Smile FM in Cape Town and Jacaranda FM in Johannesburg.

More than just an invitation to come visit

Tourism remains a big part of the story. KZN recorded three million domestic overnight trips in the fourth quarter of 2025 and another two million in the first quarter of 2026. But the pitch went well beyond holidays on the North Coast.

Investment and infrastructure were firmly on the agenda, including major water infrastructure projects and Club Med's roughly R2-billion investment in its first South African resort on KZN's North Coast.

Mthethwa also pointed to an estimated R85.2 billion in investment pledged by 17 companies, with more than 82,000 potential job opportunities attached to those projects.

The argument is that tourism, infrastructure and investment aren't separate stories - this is something that Cape Town knows all too well.

Sporting bragging rights

Cape Town, we may have the Stormers and a stadium with Table Mountain casually photobombing it, but KZN wasn't conceding this round.

The Sharks are taking their ambitions global through a partnership with Roc Nation. Cape Town may have Africa's first accredited major marathon. Still, it is also the world's oldest and largest ultramarathon; the Comrades celebrates its 100th edition in 2027, with a record 28,000 runners expected for the Down Run from Pietermaritzburg to Durban.

And when it comes to pulling a crowd, the East Coast had its own receipts: ECR's Big Walk drew 25,000 people to Durban's promenade this year, while Splashy Fen has spent 35 years luring festivalgoers into the Southern Drakensberg.

So… East Coast or West Coast?

Did KZN manage to convince a room that the East Coast is better?

The more interesting point behind all the East Coast-versus-West Coast banter was that two of South Africa's biggest coastal destinations need to play to each other's strengths.

For now, East Coast, you've got our attention - but as to who owns the coastal crown? That's still very much up for debate.
