For the first time ever, the results of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants will be revealed in Hong Kong! Now in its 14th edition, the acclaimed list of the finest dining establishments in Asia will be hosted in our city on March 25, in partnership with the Hong Kong Tourism Board.  It is mind-boggling that 2026 only marks the first time that the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants ceremony will be held in our city – especially considering how many Hong Kong restaurants have made it onto the list in previous years. Hong Kong had an especially strong showing in last year’s rankings, with chef Danny Yip’s The Chairman snapping up second place and chef Vicky Cheng’s Wing following close behind in third for Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025. Caprice (No. 18), Neighborhood (No. 21), Mono (No. 24), Estro (No. 32), and Andō (No. 41) also made it into the top 50 results.  Photograph: Courtesy 50 Best   Elsewhere on the 50 Best scoreboards, Hong Kong had an impressive 2025 with a historic double win in the bar and hotel segments. Rosewood Hong Kong bagged first place on The World’s 50 Best Hotels 2025, with Upper House Hong Kong (No. 10) and Mandarin Oriental, Hong Kong (No. 41) also making an appearance. Let’s not forget Bar Leone’s meteoric rise to the top – it was happily crowned No. 1 on both The World’s 50 Best Bars 2025 and Asia’s 50 Best Bars 2025. Could a similar honour at the top be coming for a Hong Kong establishment at this year’s Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants? For instance, Gaggan, which is located in Bangkok, was crowned No. 1 on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025 list, and the event was held in Seoul last year. However, with The Chairman and Wing being in the top three for Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants 2025, we can’t help but get our hopes up that one of them might climb to first place. While Hong Kong has enjoyed a mild Christmas and New Year, the weather will finally be cooling down to appreciably wintery temperatures in the coming week. If you have yet to dust off your downjacket this season, now is the time! The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has forecasted significant drops in temperature in the city for around three days from mid to late next week, when certain districts could even experience sub-10 degrees weather.  According to the HKO, a dry northeastern monsoon will sweep through the Guangdong region starting next Tuesday, January 20. At the time of publishing, the weather over the coming weekend will remain relatively warm and fair, ranging from 17 to 23 degrees Celsius throughout the day with scattered clouds accompanying bouts of sunshine.  Similar conditions will remain until January 20, then temperatures are forecasted to fall sharply during the three-day cold spell, ranging between 12 to 17 degrees throughout the day. Temperatures in certain areas of the New Territories are expected to drop as low as six degrees between January 20 and 23. Interestingly, this intense cold spell coincides with the ‘major cold’ period on the Chinese lunar calendar, which has traditionally always indicated the lowest temperatures of the year.  Coincidence or not, this coming cold spell will be the first extreme temperatures Hong Kong experiences since the start of this winter. Hong Kong is seeing a rise of mega events that blends a jovial festival atmosphere with a diverse range of offerings, whether it be edge-of-your-seat matches, live performances, indulgent food and drinks, or locally produced goods. One such event that we’ve got on our social radar this season is Liv Golf Hong Kong. Riding on this high, the artist has recently released smash hits such as ‘Dreamin’ featuring Daya and ‘No Room for a Saint’ with Nathan Nicholson as part of the F1: The Movie soundtrack. Coming up soon this March, Hong Kong fans can experience the artist’s soulful dance and house beats for themselves at The Hong Kong Golf Club.  Access to the concert is included with ticket and hospitality offerings for Saturday, meaning fans can simply opt in for Round 3 of the tournament and experience Dom Dolla’s Grammy-nominated beats as part of their entry.  Dom Dolla will perform at 6pm on March 7 at Liv Golf Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Golf Club, 1 Fan Kam Road, Fanling. We have unfortunate news: quiet bookish types who just want a pleasant place to curl up with a good read will soon have one less hang out. Popular local bookstore Eslite has announced the closure of its Tsim Sha Tsui store after a decade of operation on the harbourfront. While this is sad tidings for fellow book lovers in Hong Kong, the silver lining is that this should only be a temporary hiatus, as the brand has hinted at relocating to another spot in the same neighbourhood.  Eslite opened its two-storey shop at Star House in 2015, offering local bibliophiles a tranquil and spacious spot to shop, browse, and dive deep into a newfound read. A highlight of this waterfront location is, of course, the cosy reading nook that comes with sweeping harbour views. In true Eslite fashion, the space also features local lifestyle brands alongside quaint cafés, transforming the bookish venue with a touch of inspiring creativity. Complete with minimalist wooden interiors, Eslite TST has been praised as one of the most diverse and aesthetically pleasing bookstores in Hong Kong, and one of the most beloved hang out spots for local youths and bookworms on the Kowloon side.  The Eslite Spectrum Tsim Sha Tsui store will close in the second quarter of 2026, hopefully with the relocation and opening of the new shop to follow in the same quarter. In just over a week’s time, buckling up on public transport and commercial vehicles in Hong Kong will no longer be a recommendation, but a requirement. Starting on January 25, new road safety regulations concerning passengers on all public transport and commercial vehicles will come into effect, meaning that seated passengers on public and private buses, rear passengers in private light buses and goods vehicles (GVs), and drivers and all passengers of special-purpose vehicles (SPVs) must wear seatbelts. Flouting the rules means staring down a maximum fine of $5,000 and facing up to three months of imprisonment, so it’s really not worth not strapping yourself in unless you’ve got cash and time to burn. Children old enough to sit upright on their own should occupy their own seat and buckle up, while toddlers can remain on their parents’ lap provided the adult holds onto them tightly. Seatbelts should also not be shared by two or more passengers at the same time. In addition, any driver who zooms off with an unbuckled passenger under 15 years old plonked in the rear seat of a GV or the passenger’s seat of an SPV will be fined a maximum of $2,000. Basically, wear a seatbelt or pay the price. Current government legislation already requires all drivers and passengers of private cars, taxis, and public light buses, drivers and front-seat passengers of private light buses and goods vehicles, and drivers of buses to wear seatbelts, if fitted. Registered owners or drivers of a vehicle who do not have seatbelts fitted properly without reasonable excuse will be subject to a $5,000 fine and three-month imprisonment too. Photograph: Courtesy Citybus KMB, one of Hong Kong’s largest franchised bus companies, and its subsidiary Long Win Bus have already equipped more than 2,500 vehicles from its approximately 4,300-strong fleet either fully with seatbelts across all decks or partially on the upper deck. Citybus has fitted over 780 buses with seatbelts either in all seats or partially on the upper deck only. Also from January 25 onward, drivers will not be allowed to have more than two mobile devices placed in front of them while driving as part of a move to enhance road and passenger safety. Device screens should not exceed 19 centimetres in diagonal length, obscure the driver’s view of the road and traffic, or be in the way of any mirrors, devices, or camera monitors used for road-viewing. Disregarding the rules means shelling over a maximum fine of $2,000. Lunar New Year is coming up soon, and while we’re looking forward to collecting lai see, spending time with family, and getting a couple more days off to maybe go on a cheeky trip before tackling the rest of the year ahead, these are not the only reasons to celebrate. As with many holidays in Hong Kong, food tends to be the centrepiece of the occasion, and The Baker & The Bottleman is feeding our ravenous appetites with the launch of new pastries and baked goods, some intriguingly inspired by Hong Kong flavours. The Baker & The Bottleman’s head baker Helene Ng has crafted a collection of three treats to add to their existing pastry lineup, comprising the daring jar choy croissant ($35), the peanut mochi cookie ($30), and the strawberry hojicha puff ($30). Among them, the jar choy croissant is perhaps the most unusual, as it centres around a filling of Chinese pickled mustard greens (known as jar choy or haam choy) with minced pork, garlic, shallots, and soy sauce for a savoury morsel inspired by Cantonese home-cooking.  Photograph: Courtesy The Baker & The Bottleman Likewise, the peanut mochi cookie takes its cues from the Cantonese tong but lut, a dessert of glutinous rice balls in sugar syrup and roasted peanut butter dust. At The Baker & The Bottleman, this classic sweet is transformed into a cookie with a soft mochi centre, dusted in peanuts, sesame, and desiccated coconut for a crisp and chewy bite. Considering there’s already a beloved char siu croissant pocket ($35) on the menu, maybe we will see more Hong Kong-inspired French confectioneries in the near future… The Baker & The Bottleman is also keeping busy with a limited-time Lunar New Year collaboration with local cookbook and sauce brand A Spark of Madness, which has led to the creation of three festive items. Most notably, there is a Hong Kong-inspired soy chicken with caramelised spring onion sandwich ($78) among the offerings, presenting a riff on the traditional Cantonese dish. Chicken breast is steamed in dark soy sauce and paired with focaccia, butter lettuce, and a trio of signature Spark sauces, including caramelised spring onion, mad honey, and truffle chilli crisp. Other umami-driven creations include the crispy chilli and orange cookie ($35) and crack and corn dog ($48), combining The Baker & The Bottleman’s popular ‘crot’ dog with Spark’s ‘crack’ mayo. ARMYs, are you ready? BTS’ long-awaited comeback is finally here! Real ones already knew major news was on the way when the band’s official Instagram account was reset on New Year’s Day, but now we have official confirmation. After a hiatus that lasted more than three years due to mandatory military service in South Korea, the seven-member music act has announced a 2026-2027 world tour which kicks off in April and runs through till March 2027. Almost 80 dates have been confirmed across Asia, North and South America, Europe, and Australia, with the promise that other dates for Japan, the Middle East, and more territories are still to come. This comeback tour will also feature a 360-degree, in-the-round stage design, for maximum admiration from all angles – a first for a K-pop stadium tour. As for Hong Kong, we’ll be seeing RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook on March 4, 6, and 7, 2027. Given the scale of the concert and the stage setup requirements, it’s safe to assume that they will be playing in the Kai Tak Stadium. The last time BTS went on tour was their 2021-2022 ‘Permission to Dance on Stage’ era, so even though the members have been keeping fans fed with a steady stream of content since they staggered their individual returns to the limelight – J-Hope went on his solo ‘Hope on the Stage’ tour; Jin did his ‘RunSeokjin Ep.’ tour; Jimin and Jungkook filmed and released the second season of their travel variety show Are You Sure?! – millions of fans of the septet have been clamouring to see the full band reunited and doing what they do best on stage. A tip on getting BTS tickets If you’re serious about getting tickets to see the world’s most popular Korean music act here on home soil, the first thing you should do is get an ARMY Membership on Weverse. This is their official fan platform, and will release pre-sale tickets earlier than anywhere else you can find. If you remember first-hand the hair-raising experience of being in a plane that’s coming in for a landing at Hong Kong’s Kai Tak International Airport – they called the manoeuvre the ‘Kai Tak Heart Attack’ for a reason – chances are, Cathay Pacific’s latest campaign will bring back even more memories. Hong Kong’s flag carrier is celebrating its 80th anniversary this year, and as part of the nostalgic walk down memory lane, the airline is staging a revival of its most recognisable retro livery: the “lettuce leaf sandwich”. Cathay Pacific is decking out one Airbus A350 passenger plane and one Boeing 747 freighter plane from its fleet in the historic green-and-white design, modified with an “80” print incorporated into the main green stripe on the fuselage. Both aircraft will fly different routes over the coming two to three years to bring the sentimental imagery of Cathay Pacific’s “lettuce leaf sandwich” livery to travellers around the world. Photograph: Courtesy Cathay Pacific Airways Limited “Lettuce leaf sandwich” has little to do with the food that was served aboard Cathay Pacific aircraft, and everything to do with Hongkongers’ humorous ability to aptly bestow food-related nicknames upon objects. Cathay Pacific introduced a now-legendary Brunswick-green-and-white colour palette to its Lockheed and Boeing planes in the 1970s, along with red lettering proclaiming the airline name. Green and white stripes, resembling stacked salad leaves, were painted on the tailfin, ultimately lending the livery its moniker. “Lettuce leaf sandwich” was phased out in the early 1990s, replaced with Cathay Pacific’s ‘brushwing’ logo, but the staying power of the livery remained among Radio Babies, Baby Boomers, Gen Xs, and even early millennials who travelled in their childhood. Select cabin crew members and ground staff will be wearing them throughout the year to honour Cathay Pacific’s long heritage. According to Cathay Pacific, a third special livery will also be unveiled later this year to add to their anniversary celebrations. 2026 has just begun, but there are already plenty of exciting happenings worth pencilling into your calendar. Among them is a highly anticipated culinary showcase not to be missed by Hongkongers who have a profound love for exquisite Edomae-style sushi.  Chef Shinji Kanesaka will be returning to his namesake restaurant in Hong Kong this month for two days on January 23 and 24 only to demonstrate in person to an exclusive group of diners exactly why his restaurant in Japan is crowned with two Michelin stars and countless accolades. As one of Japan’s leading sushi artisans renowned for his dedication to time-honoured techniques, chef Kanesaka launched Kanesaka Hong Kong in partnership with Lai Sun Dining in autumn 2023 at CCB Tower in Central. Photograph: Courtesy Kanesaka Hong Kong On a normal day-to-day basis, Kanesaka Hong Kong is minded by head chef Seiji Taniguchi, who trained under chef Kanesaka’s protégé, Kikuchi Shunsuke, so this will be a rare opportunity to indulge in nigiri sushi crafted by the acclaimed master himself.  Omakase sushi is wholly dependent on the freshest catches of the day and available seasonal offerings, but to give you an idea of what you could expect from chef Kanesaka’s two-day stint in town, the regular lunch omakase menu features selections such as fatty tuna, horse mackerel, sea urchin, and baby sea bream, while the dinner nigiri menu favours amberjack, lean tuna, tiger prawn, salmon roe, sea eel, medium fatty tuna, and much more. Japanese snow crab has also been mentioned as an ingredient that will feature in chef Kanesaka’s special menu, so that’s something to look forward to. Likewise, his London outpost, at the Dorchester Collection’s 45 Park Lane hotel, was awarded one Michelin star in 2024. Will Kanesaka Hong Kong be next in line for a similar accolade? As expected, seating is extremely limited on both January 23 and 24, so advance bookings are a must. Lunch is from 12pm to 3pm, priced at $3,980 per person. And the boys have done it again! Hong Kong, China’s men’s foil fencing team completed their 2025-2026 season campaign for the FIE World Cup in Paris this past weekend with a stunning finish atop the podium, bagging gold for their combined effort. This marks our team’s second gold for foil fencing at the FIE World Cup, following a historic first win in 2024 on home soil, triumphing over Italy at the AsiaWorld-Expo. Comprising two-time Olympic gold medallist Edgar Cheung Ka-long, reigning foil fencing world champion Ryan Choi Chun-yin, Mike Lam Ho-long, and Cheng Tit-nam, the Hong Kong, China team faced stiff competition from the US in the finals over the weekend, trailing 4-10 early on in the bout, but the determined fencers made a swift comeback and closed the gap to finish on a score of 40-38 going into the final round. Choi then faced US fencer Alexander Massialas for the last bout, where Choi ensured his team’s victory, achieving a 5-0 score to bring the final score to 45-38, securing gold for Hong Kong. The popular Japanese mascot series Namagaki is taking over Festival Walk in Kowloon Tong with a themed installation! Since Namagaki characters began popping up inside claw machines and arcades across town, so many hearts have been captured by their simple yet lovable designs and adorably blank expressions. The Namagaki Festival features a series of installations and exhibits for fans to take pictures with, as well as a charming merch pop-up with exclusive items for sale. Remember when we all saw a giant Doraemon sitting unexpectedly at the dockyard along Tsing Yi last week? AllRightsReserved, the local creative brand behind last year’s thousands of panda sculptures and the recent Chiikawa exhibition in Tsim Sha Tsui, is putting on the Water Parade, where a set of four giant, floating inflatable figures will be making a debut at sea. In the lineup is Doraemon, perched on his favourite dorayaki snack; Elmo from the Kaws & Sesame Street collaboration; McDonalds’ purple blob-shaped mascot Grimace; and Labubu, the globally viral Nordic-inspired monster by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung. After a trial run in the waters of Tsing Yi on September 20, these four figures will be set afloat along Victoria Harbour on October 25, and will be shown in brand-new poses. Visit them just off of Tamar Park in Admiralty and snap plenty of photos, because when else are you going to see such universally recognised and different cartoon characters all sitting together? Photograph: Courtesy AllRightsReserved On November 1, the floating sculptures will be taken on a water parade between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon, sailing along both sides of Victoria Harbour, before departing from our waters on the evening of the same day. For the entire duration of the sculpture display, there will also be a Water Parade Market at the promenade near Tamar Park. Aside from pop-up stores, F&B stands, game booths, photo spots, and a capsule toy zone, the market will also feature other internationally popular IPs from KPop Demon Hunters, season five of Stranger Things, Squid Games, Snoopy and the Peanuts, as well as Hong Kong’s classic TOLO Founding Duck, which is marking its 40th anniversary. Early-bird tickets to the festivities will be available at $50 for adults, starting at 12 noon on September 26. Walk-in tickets can also be purchased on site, subject to availability. All tickets include a $20 merchandise voucher, which can be redeemed cumulatively on purchases of every $200. Attendees can also buy a viewing platform special ticket at $150, which includes entry to the Water Parade Market. Do you remember an exhibition last summer that displayed miniature scenes of the Central and Western districts in Pacific Place? In case you missed it, the Joyful Miniature Association (JMA) is back once again, this time with more incredibly detailed dioramas of life in Hong Kong, including seven brand-new miniatures that have never been seen before. The 24 art pieces will highlight some of Hong Kong’s famous landmarks, cultural customs, and unique lifestyles. Peek into painstaking recreations of Sunday dim sum at Maxim’s Palace in City Hall, chaotic nighttime revelry along Lan Kwai Fong, the customs of worship and pin wheel buying at Man Mo Temple and Wong Tai Sin Temple, a moving model of the fifth generation of the Peak Tram funicular railway, views of Victoria Harbour complete with boats sailing and fireworks, and more.  Photograph: Courtesy Joyful Miniature Association The new miniatures at this show include the Kai Tak Sports Park, the legendary old Kowloon Walled City, night scenes of Temple Street, horse racing, aquatic animals on sale at one of the many shops along Goldfish Street, the cable car at Ngong Ping 360, and Hong Kong’s transhipment history at the Insta-famous Western District Pier. The JMA brings together over 100 Hong Kong artists who collectively integrate the traditionally European craft of miniatures with our distinctly local culture using cutting-edge technology. If there’s one way to stroll through the most iconic sights and experiences of Hong Kong in just a few steps, this exhibition is definitely it. ‘Hong Kong: Through the Looking Glass Miniature Exhibition’ will be on display at The Peak Tower from April 25 to June 23 – JMA’s longest exhibition in the city.
