SVNS Cape Town returns to DHL Stadium this weekend, and the Green Point precinct is going to be heaving, as thousands of fans fill the Green Point precinct. Add that to the usual V&A Waterfront traffic – along with the grand opening of the Oranjezicht City Farm Market in its new location – and you know you’re in for a traffic nightmare. But, there are ways to beat the chaos.
What is SVNS Cape Town?
SVNS Cape Town is the Cape Town leg of the HSBC SVNS series, World Rugby’s global rugby sevens circuit. It’s a two-day festival (6-7 December) at DHL Stadium, where the world’s top men’s and women’s sevens teams play a series of fast, 7-a-side matches, wrapped up with DJs, live performances, food stalls and a big party atmosphere.
This year SVNS Cape Town celebrates its 10th anniversary in the Mother City, with 40 fast-paced games featuring the world’s top men’s and women’s sevens teams at DHL Stadium. For locals, it’s a rare chance to see the world champion Blitzboks in action on their home turf!
Off the field, there’s a full entertainment line-up, including live performances by Jimmy Nevis and YoungstaCPT, plus a DJ battle between DJ Alicious101 and DJ Chelsea Sloan, refereed by DJ Ready D.
Tickets are available via Ticketmaster. Stadium gates open at 9am, and the first game kicks off at 10am on both days.
Getting to the stadium
As with all large stadium events in Cape Town, the first rule is simple: if you can, ditch the car. Or, at least drive into the city and catch a stadium shuttle or enjoy the Fan Walk.
There’s a free MyCiTi shuttle for ticket holders from the Civic Centre on Thibault Square to Stadium stations on both days. The city shuttle runs from 8.30am, with departures every 15 minutes or as buses fill up. The last shuttle departs the Stadium station at 9.30pm on Saturday and 7.30pm on Sunday.
Standard MyCiTi routes operate as usual, and the best move is to ride into the CBD and connect onto the dedicated event shuttle.
Metrorail will run its normal timetable, and you will need a valid train ticket (event tickets don’t count). There are no extra late-night trains.
Road closures around Green Point
If you are driving anywhere near Green Point this weekend, good luck. Expect the following roads to be closed in both directions from 6am-11pm on Saturday and Sunday:
- Fritz Sonnenberg Road
- Vlei Road
- Granger Bay Boulevard
- Stephan Way, Fort Wynyard Street, Helen Suzman Boulevard, Somerset Road and Portswood Road will also be affected by closures at various times during the weekend. Buitengracht Street will be closed at Chiappini on Saturday (1pm-9pm) and Sunday (8am-10pm).
Parking, rideshares and drop-and-go
If you have to drive in, you’ll find a mix of free and paid parking in the CBD.
Blitz in early, and you can grab one of 475 free parking spots in the Civic Centre right alongside the free stadium shuttle. Open from 7.30am. Lekker.
There is ample parking at the V&A Waterfront (if you can make it there), and on-street parking in the city. It’s free from 1pm on Saturday.
Make a day of it
Rather than stressing about traffic, our advice is to get there early, arrive late, and soak up all that the stadium precinct has to offer. There are so many great places to eat and drink close to DHL Stadium, but be sure to book a table well in advance.
When are the Blitzboks playing?
The Springbok Sevens rugby team – better known as the Blitzboks – have three games confirmed for Saturday 6 December.
12:44 – South Africa vs Fiji
16:00 – South Africa vs New Zealand
19:41 – South Africa vs Great Britain (the last game of the day)
Knock-out fixtures on Sunday, 7 December will depend on how the Blitzboks finish in their pool. Those matches and times will be released after Saturday’s results. Considering that the Blitzboks won the HSBC SVNS World Championship for 2025, we're hoping for great things this weekend!
