Mljet’s principal attraction is this national park covering the western third of the island. The majority of visitors first head for the salt-water lakes of Veliko and Malo Jezero, linked by a channel of water. Malo Jezero is safe for children and its water is quite warm. Veliko Jezero is connected to the Adriatic and has tidal flows – make sure you know which way the current is going and don’t get swept out. In its centre is the islet of St Mary, with the church of the same name and a 12th-century monastery. An hourly boat links with the little bridge on Malo Jezero or you can hire a small canoe.
