Time Out says

There are very few hotels in Hong Kong that still channel old-school city glamour without feeling stuck in the past. The Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is one of them. First opened in 1989, it belongs to a generation of hotels that were built to impress – grand, spacious and designed to signal that old money wealth. After a four-year, multi-million-dollar renovation completed in 2018, it remains a reassuring constant in a city that has changed fast.

You approach the hotel up a gentle rise, away from the street, and step into a lobby that transports you back in time. The space opens into a vast, three-storey hall with oversized floral arrangements, fountains and polished marble surfaces that catch the light. There’s a strong feng shui sensibility at work here, from the water features to the careful symmetry of the space. Curving staircases sweep up to the mezzanine level, while period-style décor and grand columns nod to the art deco era.

Why stay at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong?

The Grand Hyatt Hong Kong excels at scale without sacrificing polish. It’s a large hotel, yes, but it runs with the confidence of a place that knows exactly who it is. It’s a classic luxury hotel that caters equally well to business travellers, families and leisure guests.

Its recent renovations have updated the bones without erasing the personality. The glamour is intact, but softened and modernised where it counts. For travellers who want space, views and full-service facilities – and who appreciate a hotel that feels like a destination in its own right – this is still one of Hong Kong’s safest bets.

What are the rooms like at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong?

With 542 rooms and suites, including two of the largest Presidential Suites in the city, the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong has the kind of inventory few hotels here can rival. Rooms are designed to frame their surroundings, whether that’s sweeping views of Victoria Harbour, the glow of the city skyline or the hotel’s own landscaped gardens.

Bathrooms are open-plan in concept, blending into the bedroom to enhance the sense of space but with blinds that offer privacy when needed. The open bathtub, walk-in shower, separate toilet and generous sand-toned marble vanity give the room a relaxed, spa-like feel.

What are the restaurants and bars like at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong?

With 11 restaurants and bars spread across the property, you won't go hungry even if you don’t leave the hotel.

During my short two-night stay, I only managed to dine at the Grand Café during breakfast, where guests have the choice between continental and Hong Kong sets or enjoying the buffet. The space centres around open show kitchens and serves familiar comfort food done properly. The breakfast buffet offering is generous, with options like dim sum, wonton noodles and other local and international delights.

Other dining options include One Harbour Road, one of the city’s more elegant Cantonese dining rooms, pairing refined cooking with uninterrupted views of Victoria Harbour. Grand Hyatt Steakhouse is a classic for prime cuts and old-school indulgence, complete with a wine room and an intimate cigar-tasting space. Grissini delivers reliable Italian cooking in a relaxed, contemporary setting, while Kaetsu specialises in traditional Japanese cuisine supported by an impressive sake list that includes several rare vintages.

For something more casual, Tiffin sits above the lobby on the mezzanine floor, offering a front-row seat to the hotel’s constant movement below. Champagne Bar focuses on – unsurprisingly – Champagne, while The Grill and the adjacent Waterfall Bar provide alfresco dining and drinks beside the hotel’s outdoor pool, surrounded by greenery that makes you forget how central you are.

What is the service like at Grand Hyatt Hong Kong?

Service at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong is impressively efficient for a hotel of this size. Staff handle requests smoothly and without fuss. I made a last-minute request at check-in to switch from a king bed to a twin room was accommodated effortlessly, despite prior arrangements already being in place.

What are the facilities like at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong have?

Facilities are where the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong really flexes. Plateau Spa sits atop the city like a private retreat, designed around a ‘resident spa’ concept that feels more like a wellness residence than a hotel add-on. Treatments take place across 13 luxurious suites with en-suite bathrooms, alongside 10 residential-style rooms created for longer wellness stays.

Recreational facilities are equally comprehensive. There’s a 50-metre outdoor heated swimming pool surrounded by lush landscaping, a harbour-facing sauna, two tennis courts, a squash court, a simulated golf driving range, a jogging track and 24-hour fitness studios. Few hotels in Hong Kong offer this breadth of amenities, and fewer still manage to make them feel uncrowded.

What’s the area like around the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong?

Set right on the waterfront, the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong enjoys one of the city’s most convenient locations. It’s directly connected to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre and Exhibition Centre MTR station, with Wan Chai MTR station and the Star Ferry pier within easy reach.

Wan Chai itself is one of Hong Kong’s most exciting neighbourhoods to explore. You’ll find neighbourhood bars, independent cafés and local restaurants sitting alongside galleries and cultural venues.
