Since 2024, South Africans all over the country have been enjoying their favourite films from yesteryear at Ster-Kinekor’s Throwback Cinema, and this month you can walk down memory lane with The Angry Birds Movie.

In 2024, South Africa’s cinema culture was redefined by the introduction of Throwback Cinema. The Ster-Kinekor initiative allows film lovers the opportunity to indulge in nostalgic films for just R50.
There are two or three titles every month throughout the year, with each film screening for two weeks from the day of release.
While streaming gives you the benefit of feasting on films in the comfort of your home, Throwback Cinema allows you to immerse yourself in the culture by enjoying the film on the big screen, complete with popcorn in a room full of other fans who share similar tastes in film.
Here are some of the films on offer this October.
The Angry Birds Movie (From 2 October)
The Angry Birds Movie, which is a favourite in the gaming community for some reason, is the perfect option for you if you love comedy and animation, and it doesn’t hurt that this one is family-friendly.
If you couldn’t get enough of the unexpected visit by mysterious green piggies, revisit the vibrant island life of birds that cannot fly. Walk alongside the temperamental Red, speedy Chuck and volatile Bomb, and find out if the three will become heroes or remain outcasts once they’ve figured out the strangers’ agenda.

Marie Antoinette (From 16 October)
Love adaptations? Then this collaboration between the United States, France and Japan will most likely tickle your fancy.
A young French Queen, who is fed up with every minute detail of her royal life being a public spectacle, longs for a life of isolation where she can simply be a normal girl.
Technically, she ends up living a double life where one aspect is a majestic private sanctuary, and the other a rustic village of escape for her and her children to occasionally transform into average Joes and Janes.
It’s a star-studded film featuring Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Tom Hardy, Rip Torn and Rose Byrne, and the historical set, costumes and hairstyles make for some great visuals.

Splash (From 30 October)
Splash into the 1980s classic blend of romance, fantasy and comedy where you can lose yourself in the characters’ rollercoaster journey.
Four decades later, this is still the go-to fantasy film for audiences across the world who enjoy its nostalgic chemistry.
The cast is led by the multi-award-winning Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, who also played the ruthless assassin in the early 2000s Kill Bill films.
Girl meets boy, boy falls in love with the girl of his dreams, but as usual, there’s a plot twist. Boy is also besotted with… someone else. Shall we call her his childhood hero?
