Johannesburg boasts an impressive culinary scene, with award-winning restaurants and dining experiences that cater to every type of food enthusiast. Among these standout eateries is Mad Nomad, a restaurant that truly deserves the spotlight - not only for its exceptional food, but also for its warm service, prime location, inviting ambience, and unmistakable vibe.
On 31 December, I was looking for a dining experience that would meaningfully close out 2025 and usher in the new year with beautiful memories. I also wanted to celebrate my birthday, making the occasion even more special. My search led me to Mall of Africa, one of the largest malls on the continent and a hub for diverse dining options.
As I walked through the mall, Mad Nomad immediately caught my attention. Its exterior décor was elegant and inviting, quietly calling you in - and I’m glad I listened. From the moment I entered, I was blown away by the stunning interior and warmly welcomed by the friendly staff.
Despite it being New Year’s Eve, the atmosphere was calm, peaceful, and enjoyable. Service was prompt, professional, and warm throughout.
The menu was refreshingly easy to navigate and not overwhelming, which I loved. It offered a beautiful selection of Turkish-inspired dishes, including lskender kebab, salads, and soups. The eatery also serves African cuisine such as sheep head and pap. My family and I opted for the meat platter, which featured lamb, chicken, Adana kebab, fillet cubes, chicken skewers, basmati rice, and spinach - and it was nothing short of divine.
The charcoal-grilled lamb was amazing: juicy, rich in flavour, and perfectly cooked. The fact that it was charcoal-grilled made it even more exceptional. The fillet cubes were also tender and satisfying, while the chicken was incredibly flavourful. Even the spinach tasted amazing - so well seasoned and delicious that I would happily order it on its own. The fluffy basmati rice rounded off the platter beautifully.
We also ordered a chicken pizza, which was an instant hit with my kids. The generous amount of cheese, perfectly cooked chicken, and overall flavour made it unforgettable and worth every bite. I was tempted to order more, so that we could snack on it as we waited for midnight to welcome 2026.
After mentioning that it was my birthday, the restaurant went the extra mile. Dessert included a Turkish chocolate brownie served with chocolate sauce and vanilla ice cream, followed by a red velvet cake personally delivered by the chef, Thato 'Solo' Matjeding. The brownie was decorated with a sparkler. I enjoyed the vanilla ice cream that was served with the brownie. The red velvet cake was fresh, indulgent, and my favourite treat of the dining experience.
Big ups to Chef Thato. His passion was evident, and he was one of the friendliest chefs I've encountered. His attention to detail and the birthday treat made the entire experience feel personal and thoughtful.
Mad Nomad is perfect whether you’re planning a solo date, a family outing, or a meal with friends. It is family-friendly and delivers affordable, high-quality food in a beautiful setting. If you haven't been yet and you're looking for a place with stunning ambience, delicious food, and memorable service, Mad Nomad at Mall of Africa comes highly recommended. Just make sure to come hungry because the portions are generous.
