Nkululeko Khanyi is a man who wears many hats. The Mzansi events guru, as he calls himself, is a proud Joburger, although he originally hails from Pongola in northern Zululand. He says his love for Johannesburg is rooted in its fast-paced lifestyle.

“What I love about the City of Gold is the lifestyle,” says Khanyi. “You need to be quick in everything you do. You cannot be lazy in this city. I sleep very little and work a lot because life here is expensive and requires hardworking people. With just one salary, it’s difficult to survive.

"I have been travelling internationally in Europe. I enjoy meeting new people and understanding their cultures, but I can't stay overseas. I love South Africa - its ubuntu and our cultures."

He also appreciates Johannesburg’s climate, adding, “The weather in Johannesburg is the best.”

The anti-suicide awareness advocate shares some of his hidden gems around the city.

Montecasino

I enjoy visiting Montecasino with my family once a month for dinner on a Sunday. I love it because it offers endless entertainment for the whole family and there is harmony and lovely food.

Tembisa

I live in a very quiet suburb, Waterfall in Midrand, but I enjoy the township vibe - watching taxis hooting, and people buying vegetables and fruit from the street. I also enjoy the food sold in townships. I can't go out to any township without buying kota. I often visit Tembisa township, which is not far from Waterfall. I enjoy hardbody chicken with dumplings and kota, which are sold at almost every corner in Tembisa.

Fourways Farmers Market

Fourways Famers Market is my favourite market in the city. It is vibrant and offers diverse selection of gourmet food stalls. It is one of the best markets in Jozi

Vilakazi Street, Soweto

I love visiting the iconic Vilakazi Street in Soweto, especially for drinks (by the way, I love orange juice). This popular tourist attraction offers a variety of restaurants and a lively cultural experience.

Sandton Hotel

My favourite hotel is Sandton Hotel. It offers an exceptional accommodation experience. From the luxurious Egyptian linen to the lovely staff, professionalism, and delicious food, it truly stands out.

Hyde Park

Hyde Park is my ideal spot for romantic date nights. The vibe is fantastic.

Konka Soweto

For a fun day with the boys, I enjoy going to Konka in Soweto. When it comes to the food, drinks, live performances, and vibe, Konka never disappoints.

We also enjoy going out to Centurion or Rosebank every three months and discussing all social issues, including campaigning against depression.
