Primark has been selling low cost clothes to the people of London for the last 40 years. With 11 stores in the capital city and nearly 200 across the entire UK, the affordable fashion giant is a firm stalwart of the British high street. And while other fashion chains – like River Island, New Look and Claire’s – have been suffering and closing down branches across the country, Primark is gearing up to open its first new London store in a decade.
The brand new Primark will open inside the Wimbledon Quarter shopping centre, in the space that was once home to Debenhams. Right now, the nearest Primark stores for Wimbledon locals are in the Southside Shopping Centre in Wandsworth or on Mitcham Road in Tooting, but they’ll soon have the budget clothes chain right on their doorstep. The new SW19 store is expected to open later this year or in early 2027.
Wimbledon Quarter is already home to a bunch of other beloved high street brands, including M&S, Oliver Bonas, The Body Shop and H&M.
Robert Cragg, the head of asset management at Romulus (which owns and manages Wimbledon Quarter), said: ‘We’re delighted to welcome Primark to Wimbledon Quarter. Their arrival is a fantastic boost for the local community and brings greater choice for everyday shopping right to the heart of Wimbledon.
‘Together with the raft of new openings across food, fitness, leisure and workspace that have joined us recently, Primark’s new store strengthens our vision of Wimbledon Quarter as a welcoming destination that truly serves local people and brings the community together.’
Plus: A new Wetherspoons in central London has been officially confirmed.
