Get ready to party like it's 1999.

Los Angeles fashion fans have reason to celebrate this February: "Obsessed: Fashion and Nostalgia in the ’90s" opens February 20 at DTLA's ASU FIDM Museum. Free and open to the public, the exhibition runs through June 27, inviting visitors to explore a decade that forever reshaped style, on the runway and on magazine covers.
RECOMMENDED: L.A. is full of free museums, but this one is the very best, according to Time Out
The show takes a deep dive into an era when analog culture collided with the dawn of the internet, capturing a moment of creative innovation that continues to influence fashion today. The era's heavy-hitter high-fashion couture from designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Jean Paul Gaultier, Anna Sui, Franco Moschino and Gianni Versace will be featured alongside streetwear and casual staples. The exhibition examines how ’90s trends—from grunge flannels and slip dresses to bold prints and platform shoes—still inspire contemporary designers and pop culture aesthetics.
What the exhibit hopes to demonstrate is the way that the '90s were less about trends and more about experimentation, rebellion and an embrace of individuality, especially when it came to style. As the Internet emerged, fashion became both more accessible and more expressive, creating a dialogue between high fashion and street style.
Visitors can expect carefully arranged displays featuring fashion designs, photographs, magazines, video footage and other artifacts that illustrate the interplay between creativity and culture. For those who grew up in the decade, it’s a chance to revisit formative style moments; for younger generations, it’s an opportunity to see firsthand the roots of some of today’s trends.
The ASU FIDM Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10am to 5 pm. Admission is free, making it accessible for casual fans, students and serious fashion enthusiasts alike to take a vivid journey through one of fashion’s most influential eras. So grab your best flannel, cue up your '90s playlist (you know you have one) and get ready to make the trek back to the final decade of the 20th century.
The ASU FIDM Museum is located at 919 S. Grand Ave. in DTLA. For more information, click here.
