Well, it’s finally happening: after more than five years out of action, Melbourne Star is reopening on Thursday, October 15. The giant observation wheel has been sitting dormant for 1,865 days and counting – but new owners Jay and Jane Jones have spent the past year working on a major overhaul ahead of its return. Whether you’ve been eagerly awaiting the Star’s comeback or could happily live without it, you’ll soon have the option of taking a spin above Docklands again.

For the uninitiated, the Melbourne Star first opened in 2013, before closing in 2021 after its then-owners went into liquidation. The big spinning wheel has remained closed ever since, becoming a (let’s face it, much maligned) stationary fixture on the Docklands skyline.

So what should we expect from the revamped wheel? Since taking ownership in August 2025, the Joneses have overseen extensive work on the wheel. Every cabin has had its clutches and motors removed, inspected and remanufactured, while air-conditioning, CCTV and intercom systems have been replaced or restored. Fire systems have also been brought back into compliance and lift servicing has been completed. Phew. There are some more noticeable changes, too – including new cabin interiors, fresh voiceovers guiding you on your flight above the city, VIP cabins and a new bar, cafe and gift shop. The Star's lighting system has also been replaced, with the new setup capable of full-colour animations and synchronised sequences. That means the wheel can now be programmed for different events and seasons.

The reopening follows a preview of sorts last month, when more than 7,500 people reportedly turned out for the wheel's lights-on moment.

Tickets for Melbourne Star are already on sale, with the first passengers able to climb aboard from Thursday, October 15. You can find out more and book your spin over here.
