The first black fine-arts museum in the country when it opened in 1968, the Studio Museum is an important player in the art scene of the African diaspora. Under the leadership of director and chief curator Thelma Golden (formerly of the Whitney), the stripped-down three-level space presents work by black artists from around the world.
