In our opinion, casual drinking in Porto is one of the best things you can do while you're there. The city has a great mix of trendy wine bars and drinking holes, and huge, outdoor terraces that spill onto the street.

It's also a pretty late-night place, so there's plenty options to take you into the night. Whether it's craft beer, spirits or natural wine you're after, there's something for you in Porto. Spend your days admiring its sights, and your evenings tucking into drinks and snacks. Here are the best bars in Porto right now, for drinking, dancing, or both.

Good bars in Porto

  • Café bars
  • Baixa
  • price 1 of 4

Aduela is probably the best known and loved spot for after-work refreshments in Porto, and it's a good place to sample Portuguese wines from several regions at affordable prices; you can also try sangria or moscatel (the sweet wine from the southern region of Setúbal – ask for ice cubes in summer. There’s also classic Portuguese sandwiches, featuring things like tremoços and grissini. If the terrace is full, follow the locals: ask for a drink and sit on the street.

2. Apotecário

The music drifting down from the upper floor fades as you descend the stairs into this hideaway in central Porto  a secret spot revealed only once you book. After following a few clues to find the entrance, you arrive at Apotecário, a speakeasy-style bar that opened in early 2025 and offers a genuinely unique, tailored experience, with cocktails created for each guest by bartender Pedro Duarte. The space is cosy and intimate, and the whole idea is that this ‘flavour laboratory’ serves the right drink for each person, depending on their mood that day and what they’re into. There’s no fixed menu, and each cocktail starts at €15. Well worth it.

Time Out tip: Note that bookings are made through Apotecário’s website. From there, you’ll receive all the details you need to find this hidden spot.

3. A Fábrica da Picaria

Freshly brewed beer is exactly what you’ll find at Fábrica da Picaria, on the street that shares its name. It travels straight from the tank to your glass, keeping almost all its flavour and character intact. Curious? Order the house brew, the Lager da Fábrica, and enjoy it with a bowl of lupin beans or peanuts out on the back terrace. And if you’re properly hungry, there’s no need to go elsewhere  they serve hearty bites like steak sandwiches, burgers in soft rolls, linguiça and other snacks.

4. Bar Américain

Inside the Maison Albar – Le Monumental Palace on Avenida dos Aliados lies a little spot that transports you straight to the Roaring Twenties, thanks to its cocktails and an atmosphere inspired by the original American speakeasies. The cocktail menu at Bar Américain channels the era’s bold, rebellious energy. There are also delicious small plates prepared by chef Julien Montbabut, the hotel’s executive chef and head of Le Monument, which has held a Michelin star since 2022.

5. Barbarita Tapas Bar

Barbarita brings together two worlds – those of Bárbara Carvalho and Rita Aragão – who teamed up with a shared dream: to open a tapas bar. And we mean Portuguese tapas, of course. At No. 366 on Rua de Santo Ildefonso, right in the centre of Porto, Barbarita is a cosy spot serving classic petiscos, personalised cocktails, wine and a gentle hint of beach vibes. Try bacalhau à Barbarita, petinga with cornbread, alheira migas and their Barbarita potatoes, which pack in all the flavours of a francesinha. As for the cocktails, there’s plenty to choose from – and if you can’t decide, they’ll happily mix one tailored just for you.

6. Barracuda

From the ashes of Cave 45 on Rua das Oliveiras emerged Barracuda a few years ago  now the city’s go-to rock club. Housed in the former Traçadinho bar, which once served as an annex to Gare, Barracuda is a place where rock rules the night, along with its many offshoots: stoner, psychedelic, punk and rockabilly.

7. Bar da Ponte Pênsil

One of the best spots in the Ribeira for a sundowner. When the sunset washes the landscape in different colours, the terrace at Bar da Ponte Pênsil suddenly feels too small for everyone who wants to be there – but that doesn’t detract from the magic. Many raise a glass of Freskito here, the house cocktail made with rum, lime, lemon, cola and ice. If you plan on staying late, even though you’re practically right on top of the river, you needn’t worry about the chill  they keep blankets on hand for cooler nights.

8. Base

Base is now more talked about than a bowl of lupin beans  though, funnily enough, it hasn’t actually been around for that long. Whenever a clear, picture-perfect evening is on the cards, very few can resist settling into the wooden terrace, dotted with sofas and high tables, ordering a drink and having a good natter. With olive trees all around and the Clérigos Tower rising in the background, it’s exactly the sort of place where you’ll want to share a cheese or charcuterie board.

9. Bigorna Social Club

At Bigorna barbershop, right by Mercado do Bolhão, a haircut comes with more than just a trim. Tucked behind the salon is the Bigorna Social Club, a bar inspired by the speakeasies of the 1920s. With its industrial, slightly secretive vibe, the spotlight falls on the billiards table right in the middle of the room. And to go with your game, there are seven signature cocktails  classic favourites with a twist. On Fridays and Saturdays, the place fills with music and energy thanks to sets from local DJs.

10. Bonaparte Downtown

Classics never go out of style, and even though Bonaparte Downtown only opened in 2016, it’s still unmistakably Bonaparte, keeping all the hallmarks of its older sibling in Foz: the same low lighting, the same antique-covered walls and the same great drinks to kick off the night.

  • Craft beer pubs
  • Cedofeita

As soon as Porto caught on to the craft beer hype, it spread quickly: there are now a ton of quality brands and breweries all over the country, and new ones keep popping up all the time. You can grab the good ones at the Catraio CraftBeerShop, a venue for (mostly Portuguese) craft beer, where you’ll find Porto beers Sovina and Burguesa, Minho’s Letra, Lisbon’s Passarola and Oitava Colina or Trás-os- Montes’s Gíria, and many others. The staff are always eager to offer advice, and if you taste a good one you should definitely grab a pack to take home with you.
