Located on the south bank of Bentota, the 12th-Century temple has a carved gateway and an inscription recording the gift of land and workers to the monastery. Archaeological studies suggest that King Devanmpiyatissa built the temple. Its 2500-year-old stupa is said to hold a Tooth Relic of Sri Anubuddha Maha Kassyapa Arahat, a prominent disciple of Lord Buddha. Walls within the temple are adorned with murals of Jathaka stories, whilst paintings of lotus flowers decorate the ceilings.
