1. Hike or ski to Ullådalen’s waffle hut

What is it? A waffle hut two kilometres from the Ullådalen car park, a short drive from Åre village. In summer, follow a signposted trail, parts of which have recently been fitted with new boardwalks. In winter, the cross-country ski trail follows roughly the same route, with the option of a longer loop.
Season: Summer and winter, plus selected weekends in autumn.
Why visit? Åre has several waffle huts worth making a detour for, but Lillåstugan in Ullådalen captures the feeling of a proper mountain outing better than any other, without having to plan a full day in the mountains. The easy-to-reach trail means almost anyone can make it here, whether you’re walking or skiing. The route to Lillåstugan is manageable for kids too, and as soon as the car park disappears behind the mountain birches, the views take over. Allow for around three kilometres an hour, whether you’re walking or skiing, and add extra time for little legs and big snowdrifts. Bringing your dog? Even better. The hut serves its own dog waffles when you reach your destination. Queen’s jam, a mix of raspberry and blueberry, is a safe bet, but if it’s your first visit to the Swedish mountains, it would be a shame not to try the cloudberry jam.
Time Out-tips: In winter, you can take the longer loop, which first heads up towards the mountain before an easy downhill ski to the hut. After your waffle, it’s a gentle downhill stretch back to the car park. In summer, there are new boardwalks leading straight to the waffle hut.
