Sydney’s ocean this morning was grey and angry, churned up by our collective grief about the heartbreaking tragedy that unfolded in Bondi yesterday on the first day of Chanukah. As a non-Jewish person, I can’t begin to comprehend the pain our Jewish community is feeling right now. The Time Out team sends love to everyone affected. And although fear can cloud everything, in this profound grief, we hope Sydneysiders can hold onto the connections that unite us.
If you want to help:
Some of that pain we share comes in part from our sense of helplessness – if you’re feeling despondent, there are a few little things you can do. With more than 40 victims in hospital, Sydneysiders are being urged to donate blood to help those recovering. To donate, check your eligibility via Lifeblood, then plan a visit to your nearest Lifeblood donor centre – with centres across the city. Donating blood will take around an hour out of your day, with the appointment itself taking around 10 minutes. According to Lifeblood, O type donors are most needed. If you have trouble getting through, it is because they're currently experiencing a high volume of interest, but the team is working through technical issues.
If you're seeking information:
For anyone potentially linked to the attack or seeking clarity, a Public Information and Inquiry Centre (PIIC) has been activated to support the response to the incident. If you’re seeking information regarding victims of yesterday’s tragic events, the PIIC can be contacted by calling 1800 227 228 – due to operate 24 hours a day for as long as necessary.
To help keep track of those impacted, the NSW Police Force has activated the Australian Red Cross 'Register Find Reunite', and are encouraging those impacted to register their movements to help loved ones stay informed.
