Sydney’s swimming game is on the up – with North Sydney Olympic Pool finally open again, and work underway on the Inner West’s new Scandi-coded harbourside swimming spot. And now, there’s finally some movement on the return of another much-loved local pool. Construction is well underway on the new $63.5 million Carss Park Pool in the St George area, with the revamped space on track to open in late 2027.

According to the NSW Government, piling and inground works are already taking shape at the site, laying the foundations for a new swimming complex designed to last for decades. Once complete, it will feature an eight-lane, 50-metre outdoor pool, a 20-metre Learn to Swim pool, modern change rooms, family facilities, toilets and a kiosk. The project marks a pretty major step towards bringing swimming back to Carss Park after the closure of the Kogarah War Memorial Pool in 2019, when the facility was found to be polluting Kogarah Bay.

For context, the former pool had a long history in the local community, even helping nurture some of Australia's greatest swimming talent – including former Olympian Janelle Pallister, mother of current Olympic gold medallist Lani Pallister. Following a whole lot of community advocacy, the NSW Government committed to working with the Commonwealth Government and Georges River Council to deliver a fresh new pool at the site – with a total combined budget of $63.5 million.

While late 2027 might feel like a long wait for locals who have been without their neighbourhood pool since 2019, the latest construction milestone means we’re one step closer to splashing around. You can learn more about the project over here.
