Confession: this is my first ever trip to Brisbane. Shameful, really. With the 2032 Summer Olympics on the horizon, Queensland’s sunny capital is having a moment, and after a few days here, even this Sydney-city-slicker is wondering what took me so long.
A very good place to start? W Brisbane. Sitting pretty on the river, this five-star hotel brings a playful edge to the CBD, with bold interiors, comfy rooms, cracking views and a buffet brekkie worth getting out of bed for. Since opening in 2018, it’s helped bring the W Hotels brand back to Australia after a 13-year absence.
The location, for starters. Set on North Quay in the CBD, W Brisbane is well placed for exploring the city. It’s a short walk to Queen Street Mall, while South Bank is just across the river, with its riverside walks, galleries, cultural attractions and restaurants.
The design takes inspiration from the Brisbane River, with a playful, distinctly Australian feel throughout. I loved the city and river views from bed, having freshly squeezed fruit juice with my omelette for breakfast, and that the hotel doesn’t take itself too seriously. Service was excellent, too. My air con had some issues and they sent a technician to fix it within ten minutes of me chatting to front desk staff.
There are 312 rooms and suites, with playful patterns and bright colours, decked out with custom furnishings and interiors inspired by the hotel’s ‘A River Dreaming’ design concept. Expect very comfortable beds, quality bathroom amenities, 55-inch TVs, Bluetooth speakers and your own bar for a pre-dinner cocktail. Many rooms offer views of the Brisbane River, like mine, while those looking to splash out can choose from 29 suites, two Wow Suites and the Extreme Wow Suite on Level 33.
You can eat and drink well at W Brisbane without leaving the hotel. The main restaurant, The Lex, boasts great views and hosts the hotel’s buffet breakfast on Level Three. Living Room Bar serves cocktails, small plates and high tea, while Wet Deck brings the holiday vibes with poolside drinks and light bites. The private Listening Lounge is the spot for a nightcap with a vinyl soundtrack.
Sure is. Wet Deck is home to a rooftop pool on Level Four, complete with a resort-style setting and panoramic city views. There’s also Fit, the hotel’s gym, for morning sweat sessions, plus, if you’re in need of some R&R (always), make a booking at Away Spa for a massage with a side of zen.
