Sprite, Boy, Love, First, Bank, Ice – what do they have in common? They’re all Thai nicknames. Thailand has never shied away from an unconventional name and it’s music scene follows suit. The Jukks take their cue from an armpit, Serious Bacon bring breakfast into indie pop and Pancake make pop rock sound like a dessert order. Add ModernDog’s alternative rock and Big Ass’s guitar anthems and you’ve got a playlist with plenty to explain before you even press play. These are the Thai bands whose funny names come with songs worth knowing.

ModernDog

Genre: Alternative rock

Origin story: The name riffs on ‘modern rock’, a sound-alike joke suggested by the band’s creative collaborator Tom Warut Panyarachun. Say the two aloud in Tinglish and you’ll get it.

Song recommendation: ‘ก่อน’ (korn) – before

ModernDog’s breakthrough hit became one of the defining songs of Thai alternative rock. A melancholy melody carries the raw emotional confession, reflecting on life before meeting a loved one and how everything changed afterwards.

POTATO

Origin story: The label wanted a simple name that sounded ‘mun mun’ – Thai for fun or exciting. ‘Mun’ also means potato in Thai so they simply wrote it down, thinking no one would ever pick it. The vegetable stuck.

Song recommendation: ‘เธอยัง’ (tur young) – do you still…?

A song questioning whether someone you love still feels the same way about you: do you still miss me, do you still remember all our memories, do you still have me in your heart? With its heartfelt lyrics and memorable rock melody, it became a national anthem for POTATO fans, not just in Thailand, but also in Singapore, where some fans entire Thai vocabulary is this song’s lyrics.

Big Ass

Genre: Rock

Origin story: No elaborate backstory, just a name that makes you do a double take for its cheekiness.

Song recommendation: ‘เล่นของสูง’ (len khong soong) - reaching for the impossible

The song is about falling for someone who feels completely out of your league. Even when the odds are stacked against you and it feels impossible, you choose to take the risk and go for it anyway. With its explosive guitar riffs, powerful vocals and rebellious spirit, it is the ultimate hype song for anyone daring to go after what they want. Rad.

Serious Bacon

Genre: Indie pop

Origin story: A friend suggested combining a random adjective and noun that usually don’t go together to create a memorable band name. They were ‘serious’ about making music and both liked to eat bacon – and there you have it, a breakfast order with unusually high stakes.

Song recommendation: ‘ไม่อยากฟัง’ (mai yak fung) – I don’t want to listen

This song captures a once-happy relationship that collapses into a laundry list of reasons why the relationship no longer works when the real reason is just the other person has simply fallen out of love. The smooth pop melody makes the bitterness go down easily, though the explanation is still hard to swallow.

Apartment khunpa (Auntie’s apartment)

Genre: Indie rock

Origin story: It’s an actual apartment in Lad Prao where the band used to gather and practice with rent starting at B2,500 a month.

Song recommendation: ‘กำแพง’ (kum pang) – wall

One of the few tracks that’s not about love, this one takes aim at the walls built by record labels and business interests that limit artists’ creative freedom. The band’s mix of musical styles makes the argument for itself: good music doesn’t have to stay in the lane somebody else has marked out for it.

The Jukks (short for jukkarae)

Genre: Alternative rock

Origin story: Three university friends shortened ‘jukkarae’, Thai for armpit, into a band name. That should give you a fair idea of their sense of humour.

Song recommendation: ‘อรอนงค์’ (orn anong) – a common Thai name meaning beautiful woman

Love at first sight at a party turns into drunken comedy as the night wears on and the bottles pile up. Between requests for her name, email and Hi5, it’s also a handy reminder of how old the song is. And, if you remember Hi5, how old you are.

Pancake

Genre: Pop rock

Origin story: Originally, they wanted to call themselves ‘cake,’ since it’s something you give on special occasions, but the name was already taken by an American rock band. Then, while flipping through a magazine, they saw a photo of a Thai actress named Pancake and decided to go with that instead

Song recommendation: ‘ใจเย็น’ (jai yen) – keep calm

Having a crush is one thing. Finding the nerve to say so is another. This song catches that awkward stretch of trying to keep calm and play it cool while worrying someone else might get there first. With its catchy pop-rock melody, it’s no wonder anyone who grew up with this song had its legendary rap verse memorised by heart.

Blackhead

Genre: Hard rock

Origin story: Not the acne that comes to mind (or shows up on the behind). The name refers to the band members’ luscious black hair.

Song recommendation: ‘ฉันอยู่ตรงนี้’ (chun yu trong nee) – I’m right here

A rock ballad that hits right in the feels, especially if you’ve ever loved someone from the sidelines. Even watching them fall for someone else, you’d still be there, ready to wait and wipe away their tears. Think of it as a sadder, more depressing, slightly more desperate version of Richard Marx’s ‘Right Here Waiting’ but that’s love for you.

Silly Fools

Genre: Modern rock

Origin story: Formed while they were still in school, the name reflects their academic performance. (We can definitely join this band too if no musical talent is required.)

Song recommendation: ‘ขี้หึง’ (kee hueng) –  prone to jealousy

A rock anthem about jealousy and the possessive side of love, where being a little unreasonable is really just another way of showing how much someone cares. Would that count as gaslighting by today’s standards? With its catchy rock sound and emotionally charged lyrics, it’s the kind of song that gets any crowd jumping.

The Richman Toy

Genre: Garage Rock

Origin story: Named after the Volkswagen Beetle slogan ‘Volkswagen is a rich man’s toy.’

Song recommendation: ‘กระเป๋าแบนแฟนยิ้ม’ (krapao baen faen yim) – empty wallet, happy girlfriend

Contrary to the band’s name, this song is about being broke and living paycheck to paycheck as condo payments, an iPhone and trips to the movies all add up. The playful, upbeat rock asks whether love is bigger than the money in your wallet. You might struggle to make ends meet, but at least you’re rich in love.
