Durban diners, clear your diary!

The LivingRoom at Summerhill is hosting another must-attend event. This follows their MATRIARCHS and Sunday lunch series, which has seen the team working with chefs and creatives from around South Africa, exploring the country’s ingredients, culinary traditions and regional food stories.

Now it’s time to go back west.

On Saturday, 10 October, The LivingRoom welcomes Chef Sebastian Stehr of Constantia’s acclaimed Beyond Restaurant for a six-course dinner alongside The LivingRoom’s own Chef Johannes Richter, South Africa’s 2026 Chef of the Year.

And because two chefs are better than one, the evening will also see award-winning sommelier Jennifer Hugé join The LivingRoom’s Johanna Richter to oversee service and pair the wines with the menu.

West Coast meets the East Coast

“Sebastian and I cook from the same instinct, which is to start with what grows around us. Having him at The LivingRoom lets our guests taste two distinct parts of the country at the same table,” says Johannes Richter.

Stehr is equally excited to bring Beyond’s distinctive approach to Durban, noting: “Sharing some of our creations from Beyond, made with West Coast ingredients, is a great opportunity, and seeing our two styles come together on one menu once again is very exciting.”

You can look forward to a menu rooted in indigenous, seasonal and locally sourced ingredients, with both chefs bringing their own interpretation of South Africa’s landscapes to the table.

The collaboration doesn't stop in the kitchen.

For Johanna, having Hugé in the dining room is a chance for her team to learn from one of the country’s most respected names in wine and service.

“Jennifer is such an inspiration, a true stalwart of South Africa’s wine and service scene, and she has shaped how a generation of sommeliers and floor teams approach a table. Having her in our dining room gives our team the chance to learn from her, and we couldn’t be more excited,” she says.

From Constantia’s flora to KwaZulu-Natal’s landscapes

There’s a strong sustainability thread running through the collaboration, too.

The LivingRoom was awarded the Eat Out Woolworths Green Star Award in 2025 and 2026, and its kitchen focuses on endemic and seasonal ingredients, including ancient grains sourced from small-scale farmers and producers, many within 100km of the restaurant.

The restaurant also operates with minimal waste, cooks over fires fuelled by wood from invasive alien species and runs entirely on solar power.

At Beyond, Stehr has developed a similarly close relationship with the natural landscape.

His work with the flora of the Cape Floristic Kingdom has resulted in an indigenous garden at Buitenverwachting Wine Estate, allowing the Beyond team to harvest indigenous ingredients without disturbing their natural ecosystems.

The restaurant’s seasonal menus explore the Cape’s ancient indigenous botanicals and the palaeo-ecological history of Western Cape flora, with much of its produce coming directly from the garden. For this Durban dinner, Stehr and Hugé will bring some of those ingredients from the hills of Constantia to The LivingRoom.
