Your guide to Stockholm’s best restaurants picked by local experts.

Stockholm has long established itself as a food city with an international reputation. New restaurants are constantly opening, and the city is home to no fewer than twelve Michelin-starred spots – though those aren’t usually where you end up on an ordinary Tuesday night.
That’s why, for this guide, we’ve left the fine-dining heavyweights aside (you’ll find your way to them anyway). Instead, we’ve turned the spotlight on neighborhood restaurants, local favorites, and those genuinely wonderful places where the ingredients shine and the food is every bit as good as the atmosphere, service, and setting.
Okay, the occasional more luxurious tasting menu and white-tablecloth restaurant may have slipped in. The most important thing is that the food feels worth the price, regardless of the bill. We’ve also included a few brand-new openings that have already left us wanting more.
What they all have in common, though, is that they’re places with serious return-factor. The restaurants, hangouts, and establishments we happily come back to again and again. In short – Stockholm’s best restaurants.
What they all have in common, though, is that they’re places with a high return factor — the restaurants, hangouts, and establishments we happily come back to again and again. In short: Stockholm’s best restaurants.

Stockholm’s best lunch restaurants
Whether you’re craving something fried or refined, there’s no shortage of great lunch restaurants in Stockholm. And while many of the city’s eateries and establishments know how to charge you, lunch is often a great opportunity to experience their kitchens at a more reasonable price.
In this lunch guide, I’ve gathered gems from over a decade of eating out across Stockholm’s different neighbourhoods. And while there are plenty of great spots beyond the city limits, we’ve focused here on central Stockholm. The result is a mix of everything from street food and Asian fusion to hand-rolled pasta and a popular food court with something for every taste.
Dig in and bon appétit!

Best Stockholm restaurants for meatballs
The Swedish meatball can be traced all the way back to King Charles XII’s return from Bender in 1715. It was refined by legendary restaurateur Tore Wretman in the twentieth century, and earned its place at the finest tables in 1919, when artist Anders Zorn saved Den Gyldene Freden and stipulated in his will that meatballs should remain on the menu forever.
To this day, Stockholm’s restaurateurs are judged by their own take on Swedish meatballs. Hand-rolled or not. Veal or pure beef mince. Mashed potatoes (never boiled) with plenty of butter. Pressgurka (pressed cucumber) and lightly sweetened lingonberries. And above all, a cream sauce with a properly rich brown base, seasoned with a confident hand.
From Östermalm and Djurgården to Gamla stan and Södermalm, here’s where to find Stockholm’s best Swedish meatballs!

Stockholm’s best cheap eats: From tunnbrödsrulle to meze feasts
In Stockholm, it’s easy for the bill to spiral when you eat out. Food at budget level is often cooked more to fill stomachs than with much care for the craft itself. But it turned out there were some real gems when Time Out set out to test places that don’t cost the earth.
In the list below, you’ll find a restaurant that has won an award for its organic offering. Another spot, 800 grader, has become so popular that the chef has written a cookbook about his pizza. And once you’ve started visiting the place with the city’s best Vietnamese baguettes, you’ll be going back often.
What’s more, there’s no cutting corners in the cooking at our selection of restaurants, the kitchens we’ve found make everything from scratch.
When it comes to flavour, we’ve fallen for dishes that feel authentic in their expression, where the chefs aren’t afraid to let the spices do the talking on the plate. Our benchmark was that there should be hot dishes for under SEK 185. So you can eat your fill without bankrupting yourself.
Here you go: some of Stockholm’s best-value restaurants and eateries, serving fantastic cooking that’s kind to both your mouth and your wallet.
Enjoy your meal!
